Beatles News - Israel Apologises

Here’s a bit of strange history and a bit of strange news. Israeli English-language newspaper The Jerusalem Post reports that Israel will officially apologise to The Beatles for uninviting them 43 years ago. In 1965 there were plans for a Beatles concert in Israel, including an official invitation from the government. But the concert never happened. The government rescinded the invitation and The Beatles never came.
Versions differ as to the reason the trip was cancelled. Certain Israeli politicians of the time apparently objected to the corrupting influence that the band had on youth. Supposedly there were also economic reasons.
In any case, Israel’s ambassador to the UK will reportedly meet with John’s half-sister in Liverpool and present her with an official apology. Letters will also be sent to George’s relatives and Paul and Ringo. In addition, Paul and Ringo will be invited to perform in Israel this year as the country celebrates 60 years of independence.
While I live in Jerusalem now, I certainly wasn’t here 43 years ago. But if I had been, I would have been very upset. Thankfully, these days the politicians tend to butt out and let performers perform. Israel often gets visits from high-profile international acts, including a Roger Waters’ show in 2006. It would be really cool to see Paul and Ringo here.
