Beatles Track - “Yesterday”

Yesterday is one of the most enduring, most recognizable, most covered Beatles songs. From its 1965 release it was the most often played song on American radio for 11 years straight. But it didn’t exactly have such an auspicious beginning.
Paul McCartney originally wrote the tune in 1964. According to legend, he woke up from a […]

Beatles Track - “I’ve Just Seen a Face” (with video)

I’ve Just Seen a Face, the fifth track on Side Two of “Help!” is a fun, fast-paced Paul McCartney tune.
The instrumentation is slightly unusual for The Beatles; there is no bass or electric guitars and very little drums. Instead, George Harrison plays a 12-string acoustic guitar, John Lennon and Paul each play a standard acoustic, and Ringo Starr shakes the maracas […]

Beatles Track - “Tell Me What You See”

Tell Me What You See is such an obscure Beatles track that even composer Paul McCartney barely recalls it.
“I seem to remember it as mine… Not awfully memorable” - Paul
The song is perhaps most interesting for its instrumentation, which includes a Hohner Pianet, a tambourine, claves, and a güiro.

Beatles Track - “You Like Me Too Much” (with Audio)

Buy this George Harrison Rickenbacker poster
George Harrison’s second track on “Help!” is the cute, but forgettable keyboard-based tune, You Like Me Too Much.
I find it strange that George, by far the best guitarist of the band, would write a song that relies so much on a Steinway grand piano and a Hohner pianet, both played […]

Beatles Track - “It’s Only Love” (with Audio)

Buy This Beatles Poster
Side Two of The Beatles Album Help! starts with a cover of Act Naturally, a song originally recorded by Buck Owen. But as I decided way back when, I’m only going to review actual Beatles compositions on our journey through the band’s entire discography. Maybe I’ll do a series on songs The […]

Like A Rolling Stone - Ron Wood Shows Up at a Beatles Convention (With Audio)

Throughout the 1960s, there was supposely fierce rivalry between The Beatles and that other British rock band, The Rolling Stones.
Apparently Ronnie Wood figured it was time to bury the supposed hatchet when he showed up at a Beatles convention this past weekend in New York.
According to an article posted on Yahoo! UK News, Wood […]

Beatles Track - “You’re Going to Lose That Girl” video

The sixth track off the Beatles album “Help!” is “You’re Going to Lose That Girl”. This is yet another John Lennon track about love troubles. Sometimes I wonder if that’s all he ever thought of. This one is lyrically unusually in that John is telling a friend to wise up. John threatens to take […]

Beatles Track - “Another Girl” (with video from film “Help!”)

(Photo of Paul McCartney’s signature guitar from Gibson Guitartown, London, used with permission from nynyfan’s flickr photostream)
“Another Girl” is the fifth track off The Beatles album “Help!”. It’s a fairly simple Paul McCartney love song. The track is noteworthy for being made in one take, with a guitar solo overdubbed by Paul. Along with […]

Beatles Track - “I Need You”

The Beatles were always dominated creatively by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. So much so that George Harrison, a talented songwriter in his own right, often felt squeezed out. Their first four albums combined featured only one George composition (“Don’t Bother Me”). This was partly to do with productivity. While John and Paul were […]

Beatles Track “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away”

(Image is from US National Archives and is in the public domain)
It’s no secret that John Lennon was a huge fan of Bob Dylan. The third track of "Help!" is an excellent example of Dylan’s influence on John’s writing. The busy acoustic rhythm guitar, use of tambourines, and throaty vocal style are all reminiscent of […]
