Martin is one of the world’s leading brands of steel-string acoustic guitars. John Lennon got himself a 1965 model Martin D-28 in 1967. In early 1968, he took the guitar to India, and composed most of his White Album songs on it. The guitar featured prominently in the recording of The White Album and all subsequent Beatles albums. The guitar also appears in The Beatles promotional videos for Hello, Goodbye (click here to watch).
In December of 1969, John gave his Martin D-28 to Ronnie Hawkins in Toronto. At some point over the years, somebody secretly exchanged the guitar with another, leaving Hawkins with a 1972 Martin D-28. The whereabouts of the original guitar are a mystery to this day. Where’s Indiana Jones when you need him?
