Penny Lane no more? Not a chance

Liverpool’s most famous little street, Penny Lane, almost lost its name last year. The city council of Liverpool debated changing its name after a councillor proposed changing renaming all streets associated with the slave trade. Liverpool was an important port in the transfer of slaves from Africa to the New World. Penny Lane itself was originally named for James Penny, an owner of one such slave ship. But in the end, even the councillor who proposed the plan was willing to make an exception for this piece of Beatles history.
