Single - “Can’t Buy Me Love” / “You Can’t Do That” (1964)
“Can’t Buy Me Love” is the only official Beatles track to be recorded outside of the UK. Starting in mid January 1964, the band played a string of 18 concerts at the Olympia Theatre in Paris. While there, on 29 January they were dragged to EMI’s Pathe Marconi Studios to record German versions of “She Loves You” and “I Want To Hold Your Hand”. When those were done there was enough time left in their session to do another track.
Paul wrote “Can’t Buy Me Love” on an upright piano in his hotel suite at the George V hotel. It is an unusual Beatles track for three reasons: it is based on twelve bar blues, it begins with the chorus, and it features only one singer (Paul).
The B-side is one of John’s jealous love songs, “You Can’t Do That”. Recorded 25 February at Abbey Road, it is the first track to feature George’s new Rickenbacker 360 Deluxe electric 12-string guitar, which would feature throughout “A Hard Day’s Night”. Unusually, though George plays lead for most of the track, John plays the solo.
“Can’t Buy Me Love” / “You Can’t Do That” was released first in the US on 16 March 1964, and four days later in the UK. It was a #1 hit in both countries. When it hit #1 in the US on 4 April 1964, The Beatles held all of the top five slots in the Billboard charts, a feat that has never been matched by any band.
