I saw the original broadcast of the 3rd January 1964 ‘Tonight Show’. I was living at 60A Childress Street, Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. I knew that a group from England called ‘The Beatles’ was going to be on the show and was allowed by my parents to stay up late to see it. Presumably, the fact that this was on a Friday night, made this more acceptable as there was no school the following day. My Mother, who is English, had told me that the youngsters in England were going wild over The Beatles and that The Beatles had long-hair - cut as if a pudding bowl had first been placed over their heads. It was a real thrill to see The Beatles on TV - black and white of course. We bought the LP called ‘Meet The Beatles’ when it was released in the USA, later in January 1964. By the time The Beatles were due to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show on the 9th February 1964, we were already in a frenzy. The previous acts - acrobats - on The Ed Sullivan Show seemed to go on forever and then - there they were - The Beatles - fantastic. Our world had changed and to add to the excitement, we were due to move back to England within four months - the home of The Beatles. One of the songs on ‘Meet The Beatles’ was called ‘It won’t be long’. We used to sing this as we thought ahead to being in England.
I wasn’t aware of the rivalry between Jack Paar and Ed Sullivan, but it is obvious to me that Jack Paar with his Beatles item on the 3rd January 1963 ‘Tonight Show’ was trying to spoil Ed Sullivan’s Beatles scoop. But regardless of Jack Paar’s motives, he provided my first introduction to The Beatles and I am very grateful to you for making this video available - the first time that I have seen this momentous broadcast in over 44 years.
